Product Description
We hardly know the names of such thinkers as lived then, but during our Lord’s childhood there were Hillel the kindly and Shammai the precise, both trying to adapt the old customs enjoined in the Pentateuch to the new conditions of more civilized life, and each having what we should call his own “School,” lasting for some two-thirds of the first century. And then came the crash, when Church-State, fell, and the nation was scattered, and the Temple services could no longer be performed. Their immediate task was to decide how the Law was now to be observed—at least, until the time that Jerusalem should once more be free, and the Temple restored.
